Brian was one of the most promising young motorcycle aces in the American Motorcycle Association’s flat track ranks and netted various championships and honors including the highly coveted “600cc AMA National Championship” and “AMA 600cc National Hot Shoe Championship” titles. A racing injury sidelined Shirley in 1999 and his two-wheel career came to a sudden end in 2000. The talented young racer seized an opportunity to compete in stock cars and soon returned to his winning ways. In his first full season of competition in dirt racing’s premier super late model division, Brian won a track championship and “National Rookie of the Year” honors with the largest dirt sanctioning body – United Midwestern Promoters (UMP). After only two years in the highly competitive late model ranks, Brian took his #3s team on the road with the Northern Allstars Late Model Series, which is co-owned by NASCAR veteran Ken Schrader, and yet again claimed top honors as the series’ “Rookie of the Year” and “National Champion”.

2012 Summer Nationals Win

In 2005, the native Illinoisan was offered an opportunity to partner with two legendary powerhouses in the dirt late model industry – chassis builder, CJ Rayburn, and Illinois’ business owner and racing benefactor, Ed Petroff and Petroff Towing. Shirley joined the stable of fellow Rayburn/Petroff teams including 5-time “World 100” winner and 2005 Stacker 2® World of Outlaws’ Late Model Champion Billy Moyer; 2005 U.M.P. Summernationals’ Champion Shannon Babb; and a host of other championship-backed teams that even includes 2-time NHRA Top Fuel Champion Larry Dixon. The guidance and structure offered by the veteran mentors and teammates allowed Brian to continue to excel and hone his talents behind the wheel. The team competed with all major racing tours including the Stacker 2® World of Outlaws’ Late Model Series and Lucas Oil DirtCar Series on the national level, regional tours such as the Northern Allstars, UMP Challenge of Champions and marquee special events such as the month-long summer tour-de-force UMP Summernationals, Knoxville Late Model Nationals, Dirt Track World Championship. The #3s visited victory lane seven times including three clean sweeps and 24- year-old Shirley claimed his largest career win at the UMP SUmmernationals’ $10,000 Finale/Birthday Race at Oakshade (OH) Raceway.

The #3s team will be back in action in 2006 once again competing in a variety of national, regional and special events as well as the full U.M.P. Summernationals Tour.
