Pair of Top-5's to Start DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia
Monday night kicked off the annual DIRTcar Nationals presented by Bozard Ford at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla.
The opener to the six-day affair drew a field of 49 DIRTcar Super Late Models to the half-mile oval. After qualifying third in his group, Briand went on to finish second in his heat race, earning him the fifth-starting position on the feature grid. Shirley battled in the Top-5 throughout the $7,000-to-win main event before taking the checkered flag in second behind race winner, Brandon Overton. Dennis Erb Jr., Tim McCreadie, and Mark Whitener completed the Top-5.
On Tuesday, another $7,000 top prize was on the line for DIRTcar Super Late Models. After timing in second fastest in his group and charging to a convincing heat race victory, Brian locked into the sixth-starting position for the feature. Shirley battled the handling on his No. 3s in the main event, slipping to a 13th-place finish in the final rundown.
The World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series took center stage on Wednesday night. Brian once again qualified second in his group and went on to finish second in his heat race, earning him a tenth-starting position in the $10,000-to-win feature. Shirley advanced to a fifth place run in the 40-lapper behind race winner Brandon Sheppard, Darrell Lanigan, Josh Richards, and Jimmy Owens.
