Top-5 for Brain Shirley in WoO Opener at Volusia

The World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series took center stage at Volusia Speedway Park on Wednesday night. (Michael Boggs photo) Brian laid down the sixth fastest time in his qualifying group before recording a second-place finish in his heat race behind Ricky Thornton Jr. Drawing the 12th spot for the $10,000-to-win feature, Shirley advanced seven spots to round out the Top-5 behind Kyle Strickler, Hudson O'Neal, Thornton, and Jimmy Owens.

On Thursday, a rain shower that arrived midway through heat race action delayed the program for several hours. Shirley was among multiple drivers who opted to skip the resumption of the program to save their equipment for the remainder of the weekend.

The following night, Shirley fell just short of a transfer position in his heat race with a sixth-place finish, sending him to the B-Main. Needing to place third or better in his B-Main to make the $10,000-to-win feature, Brian came one spot shy with a fourth-place out.

Heavy morning showers creating a high-water table and saturated grounds at Volusia Speedway Park, along with persistent rain throughout the day, forced World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series, and track officials to cancel Saturday’s 50th Annual DIRTcar Nationals finale.
