Brian Shirley begins Summer Nationals at Brownstown
Brian Shirley made mid-week trip to Brownstown Speedway (Brownstown, Ind.) on Tuesday afternoon for the opening round of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals. With 24 Late Models entered for the Hoosier Dirt Classic, Shirley timed in third fastest in his group before placing third in his heat race. On Wednesday evening at Peoria Speedway (Peoria, Ill.), Brian outdueled polesitter Jason Feger in his heat race to pick up the 10-lap victory. With $5,000 on the in the feature, Shirley snuck around Ryan Unzicker for second on lap 33 but was unable to close the distance on front-runner Bobby Pierce. He trailed Pierce to the checkers with Ryan Unzicker, Tanner English, and Devin Moran rounding out the Top-5.
The following night at Kankakee County Speedway (Kankakee, Ill.), Shirley posted a second-place finish in his heat behind Devin Moran, which positioned him fourth on the starting grid for the $5,000-to-win A-Main. After crossing the line in third, Brian failed to weigh in after the race, disqualifying his finish.
For the fourth round on Friday at Tri-City Speedway (Granite City, Ill.), Brian clocked in third fastest in his group before picking up a 10-lap heat win. With $10,000 on the line in the feature, Brian clawed foward one spot in the 40-lapper to register a third-place finish. He followed Tanner English and Bobby Pierce across the line with Jason Feger and Shannon Babb rounding out the Top-5.
On Saturday evening at Fairbury Speedway (Fairbury, Ill.), Shirley locked into the pole position for the $10,000-to-win A-Main after starting the night off with a heat race victory. Losing six spots in the 50-lap affair, Brian recorded a seventh-place finish.
Sunday's finale at Plymouth Speedway (Plymouth, Ind.) fell victim to Mother Nature.
