Brian Shirley visits Volusia for DIRTcar Nationals
After sitting on Monday’s program due to a broken cam during hot laps, Brian Shirley entered his Thomason Express No. 3s Late Model into battle on Tuesday at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) for the 51st annual DIRTcar Nationals. Following a fourth-place finish in his heat, Shirley outdueled Donny Schatz in his B-Main to pick up the win. Starting the $7,000-to-win A-Main in 20th, Brian was an early exit on the 12th circuit. On Wednesday evening as the remainder of the week became World of Outlaws Case Construction Late Model Series sanctioned, Brain edged his way into the main event with third-and-final transfer spot in his heat. With $10,000 on the line, Shirley retired on lap 16.
Later Wednesday evening for the rescheduled Sunshine Nationals feature from January 22nd, Brian ran into more issues in the 40-lapper that sidelined him early.
After failing to qualify for Thursday’s feature in his heat race and B-Main, Brian’s second-place finish in his B-Main on Friday pinned him 23rd on the starting grid for the $10,000-to-win A-Main. He carried a steady pace throughout the 40-lapper to finish 23rd.
For the 51st annual DIRTcar Nationals finale on Saturday, Shirley locked his spot into the show with a third-place finish in his heat. Bringing out the first caution of the race, Brian retired after slowing in turn four on lap 18.
