Pair of sixth-place finishes at Volusia Speedway Park
The 2023 season kicked off for Brian Shirley on Thursday afternoon as he entered the Bob Cullen Racing No. 8 Late Model into battle at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) for the fourth annual Sunshine Nationals.
With 47 World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series on the grounds for the tour opener, Shirley stopped the clock fifth-fastest in his group before placing third in his heat race. Gaining three spots in the 25-lap feature, Brian raced to a sixth-place finish.
Back behind the wheel of the Chris Ferguson-owned Team Zero Race Car on Friday, Brian’s runner-up finish in his heat race placed him on the sixth row for the A-Main. With $8,000 on the line, Shirley advanced forward five spots in the 25-lapper to place sixth.
An unfavorable forecast for Saturday’s program forced officials to cancel the Sunshine Nationals finale.
